Obituary for John Roger Brown

John was born John Roger Brown on May 20th, 1946 to Alberta Brown in Bennettsville, South Carolina. At a young age Alberta relocated to Boston, Massachusetts with John where he graduated from Boston Technical High School. He then attended Bay State College and Rutgers University.

John enlisted in the US Army where he served and dutifully fought in the Vietnam War. John was awarded the following medals during his years of service in the US Army: National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Army Accommodation Medal.

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force, Specialist Four Brown distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on the 6th of November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this day, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry, made contact with an enemy force near Dak To, Republic of Vietnam. SP4 Brown worked diligently for three hours on the seriously wounded troopers throughout the contact. As it was well after dark, SP4 brown was forced to work by flashlight and with complete disregard for his own safety, he exposed himself to the enemy fire which included hand grenades thrown from spider holes inside the perimeter. SP4 Brown’s actions were directly responsible for saving at least one of the wounded troopers from dying. Specialist Four Brown’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

After being honorably discharged from the US Army, John worked for several companies until he retired from Citrol in Carlstadt NJ after 30 years of employment. John was also an avid sports fan and gardener.

John was predeceased by his mother, Alberta Hemingway. To mourn him, John leaves: his wife, Linda Brown of 35 years; 5 sons, Brian Wilkins, Byron Paige, Jonathan Brown, Robert Tyson Jr. and Duane McKinnon; 3 daughters, Dolly Paige, Tammy Paige and Linda Paige; a sister, Lisa Hemingway; a brother, Steven Hemingway; Aunt Emma Harrison; 8 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
