Obituary for Delores Watts

Delores Watts was born on March 2, 1948 in Tennille, Georgia. She was the seventh of eight children born to the late Velma Dudley Watts and Ernest Grover Watts, Sr. When Delores was ten, she and her baby sister Dorothy moved to Newark, New Jersey under the guidance of their mother. They were welcomed into the home of her sister Yvonne and her family at 213 Peshine Avenue, which is considered the family home. Delores soon joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she became very active and was baptized by the founder and pastor, the late Rev. Wesley Lee as a child and as an adult. From the moment Delores moved to Newark, she considered herself a native of the city and grew to identify herself as “Ms. Delores Watts of Newark New Jersey.”

Delores, or “Lois” as family called her, was surrounded by love and her mother ensured she was raised in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Her siblings; Nita, Gen, Vonne, Bro, Grady and Nell always made sure she had everything she needed for school and most of the things she wanted. Lois felt that she and her sister Dorothy were very blessed because they “never wanted for anything.”

Lois was believed to be Aretha Franklin’s number one fan and is remembered singing her songs and imitating the Queen. Delores was a singer and entertainer in her own right, as she was part of the Queenettes, a singing group from Clinton Place Jr. High School. The Queenettes were managed by Delores’ brother Ernest, and included, Linda, the lead singer, Delores, Clair and Lenore, all whom have since been called home. According to Ernest, they were too young to go on the road. They turned down major traveling opportunities and enjoyed the luxury of opening for some major performers at Newark’s very own Symphony Hall. Known for her bubbly personality and infectious laugh, Delores was voted most popular among her homeroom at South Side High School class of the 1967, now known as Shabazz.

Delores decided to pursue a career in beauty culture and received her diploma in Cosmetology from Essex County Vocational School in 1969. The most significant accomplishment among many in Delores’ life occurred on November 16, 1972 when she gave birth to her only son, Johnathan Lamont Watts. Delores was a loving, devoted and supportive mother to John-John as a young child, through adulthood to Johnathan. She was a supporter of dreams, not just to Johnathan, but to her nieces and nephews as well. According to Delores, “it is never too late to fulfill your dreams.”

Delores worked for many years, starting from high school, under the supervision of the late Mrs. Boswell at Boswell’s House of Beauty. One night after coming home exhausted, Delores was encouraged by her mother to go back to school, if indeed that is what she wanted to do. The next day, Delores went and enrolled at Jersey City College. Delores received her Bachelor of Arts in 1978 and acquired her certifications as an Elementary School Teacher and Teacher of Beauty Culture. Delores continued to work at Boswell’s House of Beauty and was a substitute teacher until securing her full-time teaching position for Newark Board of Education at Speedway Elementary School.

From traveling from store to store in search of Eskimo pies and creating fantastic tales to get a free whopper to decorating her living room like Tavern On The Green so that she could make and serve us a chicken dinner. Any day spent with Aunt Lois was creative and an adventure. She continued her career in education until 1995 when she was hit by car. Delores sustained life threatening injuries and admitted that it was nothing but the grace of God that kept her here and seeing her sister Nell every morning after finishing a twelve-hour shift, come “and take care of me like a newborn baby.” Although Delores recovered, from this time she struggled to maintain her health.

Not being able to return to work, Delores dedicated her spare time to writing and having poems published, as well as winning poetry contests. She also began to study the piano under the instruction of Dr. Albert Lewis which she continued for many years. Delores would share her gift of writing by sending family and friends beautiful cards and letters that always had a creativity that only Ms. Delores Watts of Newark New Jersey had. She enjoyed playing the piano for family and friends over the phone as well as at church functions. During her life, she wrote and directed plays for the school and church. She was dedicated to using her gifts for the betterment of the world, while sharing the love of Christ.

Delores was dedicated to continuously supporting her church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, even when she was not able to attend. She was a generous supporter of God’s work, which lead her to follow and support Rev. Dr. T. Durr and Gospel Cathedral Baptist Church.

Delores departed this life on Sunday, September 22, 2019. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Grover Watts Sr., mother Velma Dudley Watts, brothers Master Sergeant Grady and Ernest, and sisters Geneva and Dorothy.

She leaves to mourn: her son, Johnathan Watts; three sisters: Juanita King, Yvonne Murray and Vernell Stokes; two special cousins, Carolyn and Gwen Allen; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will deeply miss her and are forever grateful for the lasting impact and love she imparted on all.
