Obituary for Charles Rommey Hagans

Charles Rommey Hagans was born to the late Charles Thomas Hagans and Inez Hagans on September 12, 1950, in Johnston County, North Carolina.

Charles attended grammar school in Newark and later graduated from Newark Technical School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He completed his formal education at Kean University. Before retiring, Charles was a bus driver with Belair Bus Company until he became ill.

As a child, Charles enjoyed going to North Carolina for summer vacations. Our family had a farm there and it was nothing for Charles to go out in the fields, pick a watermelon, and lay in the hot field enjoying it, often sharing it with his sister, Gwen.

Charles taught many family members (Nieces/Nephews) how to drive, along with his youngest sister, Ladeen. He would encourage them to use their minds to learn how to manipulate traffic with little or no effort. Charles’s mindset was: “It is a car. Just get behind the wheel and drive it”.

Although he had a great sense of humor, Charles was a no non- sense person and was very direct.

Charles was family oriented and was dedicated to his wife and children. Charles would always check in on family members and would assist them if he could. He was a highly intelligent man, and was in tune with his intuition and would use his knowledge in ways that would benefit all involved (Charles had to feel the situation out). He was pro education and encouraged family members to stay in school.

Charles was fearless and did not limit himself to what he could do. He was a realistic person and a good listener and would often offer sound advice to bring clarity to the situation.

Charles and his deceased brother, Mark W Hagans, saved their nephew from a burning house by going around the back of the house to the second floor, breaking the window out, and going in a smoke filled room to rescue him from his crib, even though the fire Department was there.

Charles was a hero and friend to all. He loved life and most important he loved his family.

Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharonda Cogdell-Hagans, his father Charles Thomas Hagans, his mother Inez Hagans, (sister) Jocile Evans, (sister) Bettie Jean Hagans, and (brother) Mark William Hagans.

Charles leaves to mourn: his wife, Denise Cogdell-Hagans; his children, Darole Cogdell-Hagans (Melonie), Tyrone Cogdell-Hagans, and Syeda Hagans-Harris (Kevin); his siblings: Thomas Lee Hagans, Dorothy Jean Carter, Yvona Hagans, Gwendolyn H. Baker, and Ladeen Hagans; sisters-in-law: Dorphine Galloway (James Galloway), Beverly Cogdell, Barbara Cogdell, Ruth Cogdell (Jerome), and Terry C Hagans; brother-in-law, Joseph Evans; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, including one special friend Ralph Green.
