Obituary for Camella Byrd

Camella Dorothy Ann Byrd, affectionately called “Candy”, left us suddenly on September 2, 2018. She was born on December 2, 1966 in Newark, NJ to the late Barbara Jean Wheeler-Byrd and John Robert Byrd. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents; Agnes King Mitchell-Burney, Andrew Floyd Tunstall and Catherine Mildred Byrd-Tunstall. She would have been 52 on her birthday in a few months. Candy was very caring loving person you could ever know. She loved God and she was very giving; full of love and concern for others and a very courageous woman.

Candy attended the public school system and was a graduate of Arts High School in Newark, NJ. Candy also attended church and she loved the Lord and would attend church bible studies. After finishing school, she was basically employed for taking care of the family children. Candy was the go-to person who you could drop your child off to. She would take care of the kids, feed them, and when she wanted to go somewhere, she would take the children with her along with her own children. She would take them to the store, church and visits to other friends and family members. She also gave them parental instructions teaching them how to behave properly and be respectful. She did not just take in the family children. This would include friends as well. All of the children loved Candy because they knew she would be there for them and knew she would give them the shirts off her back to help them if she had to. She was generous to a fault and it gave her joy to do so.

Candy was born with adversities. However, she was a very brave woman; one who did not fold under pressure. She had nerves of steel. She was bold and tenacious. She spoke her mind and was the life of the party. There are many stories like these of courage and bravery concerning Candy that can come from many family and friends. She took no tea for the fever. Even if she hurt your feeling, she’d say, “Baby, you know I was just saying that,” and talk to you in her forgiveness tone and love you just the same. This is the definition of a true “Diva” in her own right. But, Candy just had to say Goodbye to us all with no regrets.
