Obituary for Essie Frierson

Essie was born on October 12, 1927 in Kingstess, SC to the late Issac and Mable Fulton. She was the oldest of twenty-one children. Essie was baptized and a member of the St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Cade, South Carolina. She was educated in Sandybay School in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. While in school Essie sang in choirs and participated in plays. In 1948, she met Joe Frierson at a church convention and they eloped. From this union, they had ten children. In 1957, the family moved to Newark, NJ and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church under the leadership of the Late Rev. W. L. Lee. Essie was a faithful member of the church serving as a missionary and lead singer of the Senior Choir. Her prayers meant so much to so many people were healed by her homemade herbal remedies.

To help support her family, Essie was the lead chef of the June and Essie Soul Food Wagon where she prepared the food to go to the Port of Newark. There her food enticed long lines of hungry men who worked at the Port of Newark. Essie loved to cook and she really could cook. She made sure that everyone got something to eat and I mean everyone.

The Frierson Family has always been a family of singers. Essie and Joe raised their children to sing gospel in church and they were there every Sunday. You could hear Essie singing and playing her tambourine to one of her favorite songs on any given Sunday. Her favorites included “Do You Love Him?”, “Caught Up to Meet Him” and “You Been Good to Me.” Essie was a self-taught seamstress and she made a all her children’s clothes to perform in. She always showed love to everyone she came in contact with. But most of all, Essie loved the Lord. No matter what, she would always tell everyone that whatever you are going through—leave in God’s hands.

After Joe retired, the family moved to Vineland, NJ. They joined Cedar Grove Baptist Church, and then later connected with Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Mizpah, NJ. Later, Essie became a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Richland, NJ, where she served as Church Mother. She loved her pastor and her church family and had a special connection with everyone there. Her words of wisdom “I’ve tried to teach my children to work and be good people”, “I’ve come a long way”, “You don’t know like I know”, will be remembered and cherished.

Essie is preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband Joe Frierson, Sr.; her son Joe Frierson, Jr.; her daughters, Claudia and Mable Frierson and Sarah Frierson-Armstrong. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Donella Frierson of Newark, NJ and Barbara Frierson of Vineland, NJ; four sons, Rev.
