Obituary for Edith L. Perry

Edith Lascurl Perry was born September 2, 1936 in Gates County, North Carolina to Heywood and Noreen Perry. The sun set on her life on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the tender age of 81. She was preceded in death by her life partner and husband, Alfred Wilder; her daughter Renee Williams; her sisters Fawney Jean Bergen, Dorothy Thornton, Eunice Pullins, and Estine Reeves; grandchildren Jordan Powell and Little Eddie; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Hughes.

Edith was a strong and determined woman with an entrepreneurial spirit. She was not afraid of a challenge. She opened her first clothing store downtown Newark in the 70s. In the early 80s she expanded her business and opened a store on Main Street in Orange. In the late 80s she relocated to Maryland to test her entrepreneurial skills there. After having raised three children and a grandson she attended and graduated from Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland earning an Associate’s Degree. She was 57. She then went on to attend the University of Baltimore, graduating Suma Cum Laude, at the age of 60. While in Maryland she founded the Orchards at Sevens Parents Association, Inc. The after school program she created there won her grants, critical acclaim and a Woman of the Year award.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Edith returned to New Jersey to be closer to her children. Edith became the first of many breast cancer survivors in her family. She began working as a social worker at the Division of Youth & Family Services in 2000 and retired there from in 2006. She was initiated into the Beta Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 2007 where she remained active until she could no longer do so.

Edith leaves behind to mourn her passing: her sister, Bertha Hall; son, Edward Carlton Williams, III; daughter, the Honorable Vanessa Williams-Powell and her husband, Michael Powell; granddaughter, Saleema Williams; grandson, Rahman Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
