Obituary for Richard A. Hazard

Richard A. Hazard, better known as “Tadpole” or “Hatch,” was born on February 17, 1942 in Wakefield, Rhode Island.

He was predeceased by his loving parents William Alfred and Marcellitta Hazard, his sisters, Cora (Donald) Hazard and Roberta Madison.

At an early age Richard accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and attended Christ Church in Wakefield, Rhode Island. His missionary work on earth was to service his brethren, which he did generously. To know Richard was to respect and love him for his kindness, he leaves his family and friends a wonderful legacy of giving.

Richard will be remembered for his warm sense of humor, a hearty laugh and smile. He was an avid reader who enjoyed sharing his wealth of information from current events, history, politics, rare stamps and coins with his peers (this information was discussed often, at weekly board meetings held at Lee’s Barbershop, while getting a haircut or shave).

On April 30, 2018, Richard peacefully went home to be with the Lord. His earthly duties were done and his heavenly duties had begun.

Richard graduated from South Kingstown High School in Wakefield, Rhode Island in 1960. He was a Class C- Basketball Champion; that title was worn proudly. During school his love of all sports was infectious, especially golf, which he caddied alongside his nephews, Ronald, Roy and friends at Point Judith Country Club.

Shortly after his graduation he then joined the United States Air Force in which his tour of duty included several locations from Tripoli, Africa to Wichita, Kansas. At the end of his military stint, he received an honorable discharge in 1964.

Richard returned to Rhode Island, was employed by General Dynamics Electric Boat Company for (3) three years. In search of better employment opportunities, he relocated in 1967 to East Orange, New Jersey and made it his home for 50 plus years.

Richard was employed by General Motors in Linden, New Jersey until 1969, and was hired by Amtrak (formally Pennsylvania Railroad until 1976).

He was one of the first Black men to be hired as a Portal Block Operator for Amtrak and held the position of Union Representative for Amtrak Workers. Richard was fair, straight as an arrow and performed his tasks by the books.

Richard was an affiliate of the VFW #7923 (Veterans of Foreign Wars, USA- East Orange Branch). He was well respected by his peers, a gentleman, willing to help a fellow Veteran at a moment’s notice. He was quick to listen, yet slow to judge.

Most of all Richard was a loving and devoted father to his daughter, Manita Seabrooks-Kelley, a brother, uncle, grandfather and so much more. Richard was a true friend who will be missed, but God loved him best.

Richard A. Hazard leaves to cherish his memory: Dearest Friend, Jeanette Seabrooks; Daughter, Manita Seabrooks-Kelley (Dwayne); Granddaughter, Mushirah A. Kelley; Sisters, Annette Duncan (James), Judy Miller (Neil Sr.), Michelle Seabrooks, Grace Seabrooks (Freddie) Bernice Evans (Thomas); Nieces, Heidi Seabrooks, Anntwanya Duncan, Tanya Evans, Tricia Williams (Winston), Tasha Evans, Teresa Evans and Tarra Evans; Grand Nieces, Nia D. Miller, Sydney Smith, Samantha Smith and Karen Madison; Great Grand Niece, Nia Madison; Nephews, Ronald E. Madison, Jr. (Nancy), Roy A. Madison (Norma), Neil P. Miller, Jr., Christopher D. Miller (Kari), Gary Maitland, Leon Seabrooks, Jodi Seabrooks, Tolbert Evans and Tigue Evans; Grand Nephew, Garett A. Madison, Sr. (Cara); Great Grand Nephew, Garett A. Madison, Jr.; as well as a host of other relatives and cherished friends.
