Obituary for Verna Mae Hicks Holley

Beloved Verna Mae Hicks Holley was born to Leeman and Verneda Hicks on September 26, 1944 in Morristown, New Jersey. Verna is the second oldest of five children born to Leeman and Verneda. She is predeceased by her sister and two brothers of which the eldest brother died at birth.

Verna graduated from Central High School, Newark, New Jersey 1962. She was a member of the Elks Drum and Bugle Corp serving as a color guard inspiring her younger brother, Donald to play the baritone and join also. After high school, while she briefly attended nursing school, she soon decided that was not the path for her and became a financial counselor for Martland Hospital (University Hospital) in Newark, New Jersey for over 10 years. Verna went on to have careers with the federal government in U.S. Immigration, U. S. Attorney’s Office, Federal Reserve Bank, and Veterans Administration where she assumed various roles including Union Shop Steward.

Verna has always instilled the importance of education in her children and grandchildren and had a strong desire to further her own education as well as her business skills. She was always considered the family hairstylist and tax preparer with a good business mind. She decided to further her education and enrolled in Kean University in Union, New Jersey, 1989. At one point, she was attending classes with her daughters.

One of Verna’s gifts is her caring for those in need. Through the years, she has provided guidance and direction to women in need of independence and belief in one’s self. This commitment was, many times, extended to opening her home until one could obtain housing, coaching on how to interview for jobs, and endorsement so one could get the job!

Verna married Donald Holley on June 12, 1972. They shared 48 years together and enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. They purchased their home in Hillside, New Jersey in 1975 where they raised two daughters, Denise and Andrea. They loved their home and often enjoyed doing home improvement projects and upgrades including a custom brick patio that Verna truly enjoyed. Through the years they often entertained, hosting family barbecues and holiday dinners.

Verna was very well versed on today’s politics. She would often discuss the country’s issues and especially the needs of the poor and homeless. Prior to her becoming ill, her plan was to write a letter to the country’s leadership and begin to explore opportunities for the homeless, improvement to the homeless shelters, and better services for seniors.

For recreation, Verna enjoyed game shows, computer games, card games with her younger grandchildren, and trips to Virginia to visit her children and grandchildren there.

Verna was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. The church has been in the family for well over 6 decades. The late Rev. B.F. Johnson married Verna and Donald as well as their daughter Denise and her husband Len. Verna has always had a very strong relationship with Jesus and in later life that relationship strengthened as she deepened her knowledge of His Word and applied it to her life. She consistently encouraged her children and grandchildren in The Word and shared the good news of all HE can/will do with them and others.

Verna would tell you that her fearlessness was due to only Jesus. That it all was in God’s hands. And, “it all” included the illness that she fought for years with God’s strength. She would share that she was not afraid because she knew it was all in His hands.

It will be God’s strength that will comfort and support her surviving family: Denise and Andrea, their husbands, Len Robinson (Denise); Anderson Eugene Blair (Andrea), her brother Donald Hicks (Duckie), her grandchildren, Tariq Robinson, Taira Holley-Mayfield, Aari Robinson, Morghan Blair, Sydney Blair; her neices, Lisa Mack and Pamela Watkins; nephews, Derrick and Dwayne Hicks, and a host of family and friends that will truly miss her, but to God be the glory.
