Obituary for Shirley Teresa Britt

Shirley Teresa Britt was born on August 24, 1946 in Conway, North Carolina to the late Roosevelt Britt Sr. and Evelyn Lassiter Britt. She departed this life suddenly on June 6, 2019 at Saint Barnabas Hospital.

Shirley was raised and educated in Northampton County, NC. She graduated from W.S. Creecy High School Class of 1964 and migrated to New Jersey, living with her grandmother.

Shirley started at the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in 1965. Extremely smart and quietly ambitious, her talents were quickly recognized and she was promoted to her first managerial position in the Department of Repairs. Shortly thereafter she was again promoted to Assistant Manager, a position she held until her retirement in 2003 after 38 years of service.

Shirley was a member of the Union Baptist Church, holding the position of an Usher, Prayer Warrior, Treasurer of the Women’s Ministry, and she also did missionary work. She made many friends and enjoyed her church family, especially Reverend John and Delores Smith. Her favorite quote was: “I need a little more Jesus.”

Shirley was also an active and dedicated member of The National Council of Negro Women, the state and local levels. Over the years she wore many hats. She was an officer of the State, served on the State Steering Committee, presenter for the Fit for Life Program in partnership with the National Institute of Health (N.I.H.), Chairperson of the Bethune Height Recognition Program and was the recipient of the Bethune Achievers and Life and Legacy Award. Locally she was a member of the Section of the Oranges N.C.N.W., serving on the Executive Board as Treasurer and Recording Secretary. In her leisure she was an avid reader and loved brain teasers.

Shirley had five siblings, two of whom are deceased, Brother Roosevelt Britt Jr. and Sister Joyce A. Henderson. Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: her sisters, Marion L. Brickers, Linda K. Britt and Mervin E. Britt; nephews, Edward L. Britt (Kirra), Felix Deloatch (Beatrice), William Cook (Angela) and Jason Bazemore; a niece, Kathryn L. Brooks; great nieces, Kiana L. McAllister (J-Rhea), Jayonna Joyner, Ava Britt and Kemarrah Norman; great nephews, Evan Britt and Kemaj Norman; a dear and special aunt and uncle, Georgia M. Lassiter and James L. Porter; devoted cousins, Mildred Smith (Albert) and Kyndall A. Lassiter; one Goddaughter, Nannette Peaks; dear friends, Nancy Tiller and Lois Powell; along with a host of cousins, friends and her N.C.N.W. family.
