Obituary for Robert Lee, Jr.

Legendary Robert Lee, Jr. entered into eternal rest on July 17, 2019 in Newark, NJ, where he resided with his daughter, Wanda Gibbons, and son-in-law, Lamont Gibbons. Early on in his physical decline, Robert Lee, Jr. was taken care of by his daughter, Helen Lee Jones, and granddaughter, Monique Najee Ullah in Virginia. Later, as his decline continued, he relocated to his daughter, Wanda, and son-in-law, Lamont, who were his caretakers for eight years.

Robert Lee, Jr. was born March 22, 1932 in Chester, SC to the late Jeanette (Gray) Lee and Robert Lee, Sr. (Bob) of Spartanburg, SC. He attended school in Chester, SC until 5th grade. He went to work to assist with the bills. He worked as a delivery person for Black Drug Store.

As the years went by, Robert Lee, Jr. met and married Lucille Simpson in Chester, SC. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Helen, Geraldine and Wanda; as well as one terrific son, Robert Michael Lee.

Robert decided to relocate to his family to Vauxhall, NJ for a better quality of life. In support of his decision, his late mother-in-law happily gave him $500.00 for a down payment on their home. He was so grateful that later on in years he returned the favor, though she did not require it of him. So, they raised their family at 255 Oregon Street in a single-family home.

Robert then followed a love for working on cars and became a self-taught mechanic, working with Marvin at Marvin’s Auto Station in Vauxhall, NJ. From there, Robert Lee, Jr. managed his own mechanic shop at Exxon Gas Station, Vauxhall, NJ; where he was called the best mechanic in Vauxhall.

Robert Lee, Jr. taught the trade to his son, Robert Michael Lee; and to his nephews of SC, Rev. Fred Lee, Jr. and Rev. Joe Lee. Robert didn’t just look out for his immediate family, but all his family.

Robert Lee, Jr. was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette (Gray) Lee, and later his father, Robert Lee, Sr.; wife, Lucille (Simpson) Lee (1984); his only son, Robert Michael Lee (1986); daughters, Stella Louise Graham Brown (2006) and Hattie Lee Graham McLean (2018); sisters, Geneva Snyder (1972), Mamie Feaster (2010) and Virginia Clark (2017); brother, Ralph Lee (2006); mother-in-law, Gertrude Simpson; sisters-in-law, Emma Bell, Hattie Mae Caldwell, Virgie McMahand and Irene Robertson of NJ; brothers-in-law, James Allen Simpson, Thelmo Stratford, Brooks Caldwell and Eddie Robertson of NJ, and Bill McMahand and David Cornwell of SC.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory: his daughters, Helen (divorced) of NJ, Geraldine (Moses) of NC, and Wanda (Lamont) of NJ, Linda (Tommy Lee) of NC, Tammy of SC, Leticia (Victor) of NC; 35 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Estelle Cornwell (Widowed) of SC and Lillie Mae Lee of NJ; sister-in-law, Ruth Lee of NY; a beloved friend, Ursulee Frazier of NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends.

Robert Lee, Jr. was a good, kind, loving husband, father, brother, uncle and loyal friend. He had an infectious million dollar smile till his last day that will be truly missed by us all.
