Obituary for Robert (Bobby) Lee Drummond

Robert (Bobby) Lee Drummond was born on December 19, 1943 in Farrell, PA to the late Edward Henry Drummond Sr. and Naomi Pearl Ramey. God in his divine mercy called him home from labor to reward on August 26, 2019 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center surrounded by family and friends.

In 1956 Robert relocated to Newark, NJ to live with his Aunt Gertrude Ramey. Robert attended Newark Technical School and played basketball for the school. Upon graduation Robert pursued a career as a printer. Robert worked as a printer for Replica in Elizabeth NJ and Hartz Mountain in Secaucus NJ.

Robert married the love of his life Norma Jean Dobbins on September 14, 1968. God bless them with two children Robert and Angel. On June 28, 2014 they rededicated their wedding vows and celebrated 50 years marriage.

Robert worked at Hartz Mountain until his retirement and illness in 2009. Robert was the first person in New Jersey and the 17th in the entire country to receive a Dura-Heart which is a ventricular assist device or heart pump. In December 2009 Robert had a successful heart transplant, before his surgery Robert promised to turn his life over to Jesus Christ after his surgery. Upon a great recovery in 2010 he rejoiced in his new life after his heart transplant and joined St. Luke A.M.E. Church in June 2010 under the leadership of Pastor Dr. James E. Deas, Sr. who was very supportive in his recovery and his new life as a child of God.

Robert served on Trustee board and was a member of the James E. Deas Male Chorus and the Senior Program. He truly loved giving back. He volunteered in the kitchen cutting cake, helping at the annual Family and Friend’s Day cookout.

Robert was an active member of the Healthy Hearts support group for heart transplant patients at Newark Beth Israel. He also volunteered with Sharing Network 5K Celebration of Life by collecting donations for organ and tissue donations.

Robert was great man who loved life. His family meant the world to him. His hope was to shoot hoops with his grandchildren and continue to be a handyman around the house, one of his favorite hobbies before heart problems sidelined him.

Robert was a dedicated husband, loving father, a proud grandfather/great grandfather and beloved uncle and friend. Robert will be remembered for the love he showered his family and friends as well as his bright smile and infectious sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his siblings Barbara Hodges of PA, Edward Henry Drummond of NJ, Reginald Drummond of NJ, Alice Barnes of GA, Marlene Young of PA and Francis Green of NJ.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife Norma Jean, a son Robert Drummond and a daughter Angel Drummond all of Hillside, NJ; six loving grandchildren: Linda, Keir, Shamirah, Lamar, Ameir, Aloni; three great grandchildren: Amilya, Genesis, Elias. One sister Edna Rouse of South River, NJ; one brother Rayford Davis of Jersey City, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
