Obituary for Redell Hicks Pettiford

Redell Hicks Pettiford was born to Mozelle Hicks and George “Specs” Hicks on September 24, 1954 in Newark, NJ. She attended 15th Avenue School and graduated from West Side High School in 1971. She furthered her education at Sawyer Business School in Elizabeth, NJ.

After completing her studies, she assisted her father, George ‘Specs’ Hicks, working at The New Well Rehabilitation Center in Newark, NJ until she began working at United Hospital on South 9th Street in Newark, NJ. She started by working in the kitchen then she moved to Admitting. During her 25 years of service her business savvy, hard work and dedication took her to be the Director of Payroll. When United Hospital closed in late 90s she moved to Pennsylvania where she became the payroll administrator for AAA Income Tax in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. She has also worked at Brooks Brothers, Chicos, Bon Worth and Harry & David in Tannersville, PA until she retired in 2016.

In 1974, while working at The New Well, she met Doren Pettiford through a friend in the elevator of Academy Spires apartment building in Newark. Two years later, in 1976, they were married and established residency in their hometown of Newark, NJ. From this union two daughters were born, Doriane Nykia in1978 and Danielle Shen-Ya’ in 1982. Soon after the children were born they dedicated their life to Christ and became born again Christians. Redell’s greatest joy was her family, from helping to raise her nephews and cousins to finally having her own and gaining her spiritually adopted children in the late 90s. She was happiest surrounded by her family and close friends like Cathy and Pat, among others. She was always surrounded by love.

Redell is survived by: her husband Doren Pettiford, daughters Doriane Nykia and Danielle Shen-Ya’ Pettiford Topping (Jon), mother Mozelle Hicks, sisters Tara Murray-Hicks, Shirley Grice and Donna Wright, nephews Mustafa Lawrence, Hadid Lawrence, Raheem Lawrence, Ibn Bilah Pitman, Hykeem Worchester, Henry Rogers and Lawrence Rogers, a niece Tabitha Worchester, spiritually adopted children Tracey Brown, McClenton Spruill (a.k.a Poonie), Juan L. Ramos (a.k.a. Ice), Daryl L. Williams Sr., Darnell K. Williams, Collette Y. Turner, Vaughn A. Jones and Nadia Battle, along with a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews, extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her father George “Specs” Hicks, a sister Qurell Hicks-Nixon, and brother George Worchester.
