Obituary for Leroy Kenneth "Kenny" Deas

Leroy Kenneth Deas (Kenny as he was affectionately called) was born on August 28, 1950 to Bernice (Deas) Canty in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He departed this life on October 29, 2019 in Newark, New Jersey.

Leroy attended public school in Sumter County, SC school system and graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1968. He received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Joshua Church in Dalzell, SC.

Leroy was drafted in the United States Army as a Private First Class (PFC) in 1969 and served from July 1970 to February 1972. He served in Vietnam from December 1970 to December 1971. He was honorably discharged with the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Service Medal and Air Medal. He also received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was awarded the Bronze Service Star for gallantry. He continued to serve in the Army Reserves until July 1976.

Leroy was employed by New York City Parks Department. He received education and training as an architectural draftsman and designed projects.

Leroy was a very loving, kind and generous person, especially to his family and friends. If you stayed around him long enough, you would hear him saying: “Dig It” and “What’s up dude”. He enjoyed going to various casinos and hanging out with his family and friends. He loved to drive (extremely fast) and you could often find him driving family and friends to visit family members in other states.

Leroy leaves behind to cherish his memory: his mother, Bernice (Deas) Canty; son, Rory K. Harden, and his mother, Barbara Harden; two grandchildren: Jayden Kenneth Harden and Kamryn Denise Harden; two sisters, Marie Deas and Ida Mae Deas; three brothers, Richard (Ricky) Canty, Moses (Dyke) Deese (Desiree) and James (Bobby) Sanders; a special friend, Sandy Geiger; nephew, Michael Deas; nieces, Cindy D. Leonard (Dennis), Vernice (Pop) Deas, Tyhicia Deas and Felicia Deas; great nephews, Justin Leonard and Omar Deas; and great nieces, Marquita Leonard, Alexis Leonard, Cierra Leonard and Tyhicia (Ayanna) Deas. His nephew, Sheldon T. Deas, predeceased him in October of 2003. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, friends and other relatives.
