Obituary for Joseph Risleus Rislin

Joseph Risleus Rislin was born on April 11, 1957 in the countryside of Grand-Islet Desdunes, Haiti. No stranger to hard work, he grew up on his father’s farm working more than half of the day to help make ends meet. Dedicated to progress, he never lost sight of the value of education. Joseph always made time to complete his studies. While in school in Haiti, he met and married Monise Odige and started a family. Monise is the matriarch of the family and is Joseph’s lifelong supporter.

In his 20’s he came to the U.S. to build a better life for his family. Joseph always had ambitious goals and his ability to strive for more blessed not only his family, but all those around him. Joseph was a psychologist, a historian, a comedian, and a jack of all trades. Above all he was a proud father and a lover of the Lord. He pursued his degree in Psychology from Rutgers University and ensured his children had the opportunity to graduate from schools like Howard University and Jersey City University and even become a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force. Joseph was a passionate advocate for education. He would consistently promote the importance of education to his children, his family, and anyone else he encountered. Joseph believed that with your mind, you can accomplish anything.

In his life, Joseph had to overcome adversity and many obstacles. Even through those moments and sacrifices, his heart of generosity was apparent. Joseph was the go to person for those in need of assistance. He was always helping and advising someone. Even when it seemed like there sometimes was no reward for his hard work, he always knew the real reason he continued to help people. He knew and understood the sentiment behind this Mother Teresa ‘Anyway’ Poem:

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

That bright smile will be missed. Joseph was loved beyond measure by his family. Although Joseph is gone in the physical form, his spirit will live on and never be forgotten.

If you’ve learned nothing else from Joseph, remember to live your life to the fullest, take risks, have faith, learn to laugh through it, and expect great things from the Rislin name.
