Obituary for Jean De Lois Adams

Jean De Lois Adams entered into eternal rest on September 4, 2019 with her loving family at her bedside. Jean was born September 18, 1937 to the late Rolister Dancy and the late Arthur Goodman both of Scotland Neck, NC. She was baptized by Antioch Baptist Church where she attended with her grandparents the late Luther Wiggins and the late Sylvester Moore. Jean attended Brawley High School in Halifax County, NC. In 1953, Jean moved to Newark, NJ where she attended South Side High School (presently Malcolm X Shabazz High School).

Jean was notable for being a devoted wife and loving mother. She was previously married to the late David Coleman. She later married the late John Allen Adams in 1977 and moved to Irvington, NJ the same year. She remained there until her death. She joined Promised Land Baptist Church in Newark, NJ in the early 1980s and served on the usher board and as deaconess of the church until her health decline in 2016. From 2016 to Good Friday of 2019, she was cared for by her beloved youngest son, the late Torry A. Adams. Jean was also renowned for her class and style in fashion and particularly her extravagant hats worn to church, which she took pride in wearing. She was a homemaker but often referred to herself as a “domestic engineer”.

Jean was preceded in death by: her husband, John A. Adams; sons, John Quincy Adams, Dexter Coleman and Torry A. Adams; her parents, Rolister Dancy and Arthur Goodman; a brother, Thurman Goodman; and sisters, Doreatha Dancy, Bessie Baker and Mildred Debrew (Clarence).

She is also survived by: six sisters, Daisy Jenkins (Randolph) of Newark, NJ, Catherine Steen of Burlington, NJ, Hazel Mines of Suitland, MD, Annie L Debrew (Joe) of Laplata, MD, Lou Creacye Sanders (Bryant) of Clinton, MD and Marilyn Goodman (late Tommy) of Oxon Hills, MD; two sisters-in-law, Gussie Goff of Palmetto, FL and Queen Mays of Philadelphia, PA; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Adams and Clarence Adams both of Palmetto, FL; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the Promised Land Family.
