Obituary for Irma Jean Turner Murphy

‘A Time To Be Born’: on February 10th, 1936, Irma Jean Turner was born to the late Mayshack and Hester Turner.

‘Accepting JESUS CHRIST as Her SAVIOR’: an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and fellowshipped at the Hopewell Baptist Church in Sylvester, Georgia.

‘A Time To Prepare For A Life Endeavors’: Irma attended school in Doerun, Georgia until she moved with her family to Sylvester, Georgia. There she attended Oak Hill High School.

‘A Time To Love’: after doing much traveling, she met the love of her life, Mr. James David Murphy (JD) who preceded her in death in April of 1982. She returned home to marry him, and on May 14th, 1955 James and Irma were united in Holy Matrimony.

‘A time to Rejoice Life’: Irma and JD continued to travel. In 1963, they bought their home in Newark, New Jersey to make a new life for their family. They were very active in their new community. James became the President of the 14th Street Friendship Block Association. Irma was a great hostess; having block party after block party and all-you-can-eat cookouts. After her husband JD’s death in 1982, she assumed the role as President of the Block Association.

Irma was always very active and participated in many group organizations. She would often drive to Anaheim, California to Disneyland to be with her “Eastern Star” sisters. Traveling, planning events or cooking and entertaining for the Block Association is what Irma was doing best, until her health started to fail.

‘Entering the Arms of Jesus’: in obedience to our Heavenly Father, Irma was called home, away from earthly pain to a place of love, peace and tranquility on June 19th, 2019.

‘A Time To Mourn’: Irma leaves to rejoice in her memories: a loving brother, Willie James Turner (Christine Turner), S. Ozone Park, NY; three loving sisters, Mary Hamilton, Springfield Gardens, NY, Alberta Jackson, Jamaica, NY and Hester Louise Roberts (Bennie Lee Roberts), Hempstead, NY; one brother-in-law, Earl Murphy, Hempstead, NY; and a great host of relatives and friends.
