Obituary for Geraldine Barr

Geraldine Brown was born April 10th, 1939 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. Her parents, the late Binor and Abraham Brown, loved her. She was the third oldest of nine children. She was educated at Chavis Elementary and High School, where she played basketball. After graduating she moved to Boston, Massachusetts and lived for a while with her oldest sister, Jannie Murphy.

Geraldine eventually moved to Newark, New Jersey and on June 30th, 1966 she married Jim Bolden Barr. They had two children together, Winfred and Anna. For over 40 years she was a faithful member of the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized by the church founder, the late Rev. James Perry. Geraldine served as a church nurse and on the Willing Workers Committee.

Geraldine worked at Signal Stat in Union, NJ for over 15 years until the company closed. She then decided to go back to school and received her certification as a nurses’ assistant. She worked at Daughters of Israel Nursing Home in West Orange, NJ. She was also a member of Queen of Sheba Hope Court # 8 Order of the Eastern Stars. In 1991 an automobile accident forced her to retire from the work she loved so much. In 2010 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and although her memory was fading she kept good spirits remained active around her home, knitting and crocheting very beautiful hats, scarves, and blankets for family and friends.

On July 12th 2019 the Lord God called Geraldine home where she will be greeted by her husband Jim Bolden Barr, her sister Jannie (Doll) Murphy, brothers Moses (Bubba) and Hubert (Leroy) Brown, and son-in-law Franklin Bowe. Geraldine leaves behind to cherish her memory: her children, Winfred and Anna; two brothers, Abraham Jr. and John Brown (Oletha) of Hemingway, S.C.; and three sisters, Mary Langley, Bettie Jean Davis (Harry) of Hemingway S.C. and Hettie Edwards of Lawrenceville GA. She also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including two extra special friends that became part of the family in taking care of her until her last days, Rosie and Marie.
