Obituary for Doris Marilyn Goode

Doris Marilyn Goode was born February 1st, 1928 in Newark, New Jersey. She was the wife of New Jersey’s Boxing Hall of Fame inductee George Oscar Goode. During the Civil Rights movement, as a civil rights activist for education, she was a prominent figure who pioneered the first Head Start Program in Newark, New Jersey, working in concert with the administration of Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson.

Upon the completion of her formal education at Newark State Teacher’s College (presently known as Kean University) in Union, New Jersey, Doris Marilyn Goode continued her advocacy in education at the Newark Pre-School Counsel, utilizing her degree in Early Childhood Development to help inner-city youth of Newark. Alongside of her many professional accomplishments, Doris Marilyn Goode was also a lifelong member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she also taught Sunday School for many years, and ultimately became Mother of the Church.

To all and many who had the honor of knowing her gentle spirit, her faithful heart, her giving soul, her fearless courage, and her amazing example of strength, persistence, and love towards all mankind she will be truly missed and remembered.

Doris Marilyn Goode is survived by: three sons, Kenneth Goode (Joyce Goode), Kelton Goode and James Edward Grant (Patricia Grant); two daughters, Sheila Goode and the late Derilyn Goode; two sisters, Carol Wilson (Carl Wilson) and June Jefferson; alongside of nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
