Obituary for Deaconess Sandra Joanne Smith

Deaconess Sandra Joanne Smith, affectionately known as “Sandy” to her friends and “Nana” to her grandchildren, was born to the late Sara Ann and Ed Cousar on October 6, 1938 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Sandra departed this life on the morning of Sunday, June 23, 2019 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Sandra was united with her husband of 51 years, the late Lee Ernest Smith, in 1957 in
Newark, New Jersey. They had three children: sons Reuben L. Smith and Reginald
P. Smith, and a daughter, Beverly J. Smith, who precedes Sandra in death. Sandra’s early developmental years were spent in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she spent most of her time playing, learning, and attending school with her Aunts and Uncles. Additionally, Sandra was extremely close to her grandparents who instilled the values of faith and family. Sandra accepted Christ at a very early age and attended church regularly as a child. During her early years, she started learning many of the skills and developed attributes that would aid her later in life, such as cooking/baking, sewing, reading, and serving others. Also, Sandra developed a robust thirst for learning.

During Sandra’s mid teenage years, she relocated to New Jersey and spent most of her time in Jersey City and Newark. She worked various jobs and developed a love and proficiency for key punching. This led to a position at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Newark, where she worked for 13 years. Some of Sandra’s hobbies included cooking, baking and interior decorating. One of Sandra’s favorite talents involved creating clothing for herself and others. She loved to sew and crochet, as her favorite pieces were crocheted capes and blankets. Sandra also loved to play the piano, Additionally, she had a particular fondness for reading and learning. This thirst for knowledge eventually led Sandra to become a World Book Encyclopedia salesperson, where she became very successful, as she was driven to help others expand their knowledge.

Sandra was an active, steadfast member of Trinity Temple Seventh-Day Adventist Church where she held many roles. Sandra served on the Hospitality Committee and as a Deaconess, where she was always willing to serve and help others in the name of the Lord. Additionally, Sandra was called to spread the Gospel through her work as a Literature Evangelist (with the Allegheny East Conference). As a Literature Evangelist Sandra made available and distributed biblical materials and would always love the opportunity to testify and teach about the goodness of the Lord. Sandra touched many lives through her tireless work as a Literature Evangelist. Sandra took particular joy in teaching children/young people about the Lord through this ministry. By helping to teach children strong biblical principles through this missionary work that would last a lifetime, she felt it was an honor to serve the Lord while also assisting young people in pursuit of their education.

Deaconess Smith personified determination and strength, despite some health challenges. Sandra’s persistence, resilience, and unwavering faith in her Savior were truly admired.

Deaconess Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Sara Ann and Ed Cousar; her husband, Lee E. Smith; a sister, Linda Evans; and a daughter, Beverly J. Smith. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Reuben L. Smith (Mildred Smith) of Orlando, FL and Reginald P. Smith (Anissa Smith) of Union NJ; brother-in-law, Percy Smith, and sister-in-law, Alma Cooper-Scott (Richard Scott); five grandchildren: Amanda DuPree, Christopher Smith, Devin, Alanna, and Arianna Smith; two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Donnel DuPree; and a host of extended family and friends.
