Obituary for Ulysses Dobbins

Ulysses Dobbins was born in Georgetown, South Carolina on March 1, 1929 to the late Willie Pringle and Ellen Dobbins Ross.

Ulysses was adopted by his grandparents, the late Harry and Orella Dobbins.

Ulysses received his formal education at the Howard Public School System in South Carolina. He played football at Howard High School as #17.

In August 20, 1946 he was joined in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Gloria Ann Flagler. Upon this union they moved to Newark, NJ. Ulysses and Gloria were blessed with four children, Mrs. Norma Drummond (Robert) of Hillside; Cynthia Wilson of Orange, NJ, the late Linda Whitfield of Philadelphia, PA and the late Thomas Dobbins of East Orange, NJ.

Ulysses was employed by the Celanese Coating Company, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Anheuser Busch Brewing Company of Newark, NJ where he retired September of 1994.

Ulysses joined St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. W.R. Mulberry on South Orange Avenue, Newark, NJ. He was Vice President of the Trustee Board, an Usher and sang on the male choir.

On June 27, 2010, Ulysses became a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Rev. James Deas with his wife.

Ulysses was a caring, kind-heated man that loved his family unconditionally. Ulysses was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

He was full of fun and wisdom and enjoyed telling stories of his family history.

Ulysses leaves behind to cherish his memory and life: his two daughters, Norma Jean Drummond (Robert), Cynthia Wilson; seven grandchildren, Robert, Donna, Angel, Niteze (Carl), Kyle, Usef, and Harold; 11 great-grandchildren, Linda, Ebony, Keir, Shamirah, Lamar, Ameir, Kyree, Kyu, Keaira, Antoine and Khaleel; three great great-grandchildren, Amilya, Geniss and Elias; one nephew and a host of cousins and friends.
