Obituary for Thelma Cole

Thelma Otelia Cole, lovingly called Mama Cole, was born to the late Charles Allen Carter and Lillie Dodson Carter-Price on December 31, 1928 in Burkesville, VA.

Thelma was married to Julius Cole, her devoted husband of 55 years, on February 20, 1963.

Thelma did not have a formal education. She was self-taught. She loved caring for others so she trained to be a home health aide then became a nurse’s aide at White House Nursing Home in Orange, New Jersey. She worked there until retirement.

All who knew Thelma knew that she did not sugarcoat a thing! She said what she meant and meant what she said. She did not hold her tongue.

Thelma loved to crochet and cook. Every Sunday she opened her home to a buffet style dinner with fresh homemade wine and ¬¬¬ cakes. All were welcome!

Thelma was an avid shopper! Every week, sometimes three times a week, she traveled to New York City to the Jewelry District. If there was a thrift shop anywhere in the United States she knew about it. She enjoyed traveling to other countries as well.

Thelma loved family. She was the mother of three children, Theresa, Jeffrey and Dottie. “Grandma Cole” had a heart for children. She spoiled her grandchildren and great grandchildren rotten. She took them on daily ventures on the trains and buses, buying them whatever they wanted from whatever thrift shop they were visiting that day.

In her later years Thelma resided at Daughters of Israel, her daughter Theresa’s employer. There she cared for her baby doll Ryan until her passing on April 27, 2018.

Thelma Otelia Cole is survived by: her husband, Julius Cole; her children, Theresa (William) Green and Dorothy Cole; six grandchildren, Robert (Trenise) Sullivan, Torresia (Maurice) Williams, Debra (Mynard) Foster, Jamal Green and Deanna Nazario; 20 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Norman Allen Carter of Dundalk, MD; three sisters, Eva Carter-Hall (James) of Gastonia, NC, Linda Carter and Clara Carter-Bland of Rome, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Thelma was preceded in death by: her parents, Charles Allen Carter and Lillie Dodson Carter-Price; her son, Jeffrey Lynn James; and 11 siblings, Margaret, Alberta, Gladys, May, Percy, Cornelius, Charles, Frank, Leon, Solomon and Paul.
