Obituary for Mother Reola Hopes

Mother Reola Hopes was the 8th of 10 children born to the late Leroy Sr. and the late Nancy Robinson on April 16, 1937 in Dermott, Arkansas. She attended Bloomy Shade Baptist Church as a child.

Her family later moved to Kilbourne, Louisiana, where she met Nathaniel Hopes Sr., and the two were married on December 17, 1955 in Eudora, Arkansas. To this union, the Lord blessed them with 6 children.

In 1959 they moved to Newark, New Jersey. Mother Hopes was called by the Lord in 1970 off of her husband’s vegetable truck and sent to Bethesda COGIC, where the Lord baptized her with the Holy Ghost to work in His kingdom. She faithfully served under 3 generations of pastors, the late Bishop James H. Screven, the late Overseer Nathaniel L. Screven Sr. and Bishop Ahmed M. Screven, Esq. until the Lord called her home. While serving in the church she also worked for New Community Corporation as a home health aid, where she served for many years.

Throughout her tenure at Bethesda COGIC, she worked tirelessly in the kitchen preparing meals for the different events. Mother Hopes loved to cook and was one of the best cooks that you can imagine. Mother served in various positions, the prayer warriors, member of the Lavender Ladies and for a time the Gospel Chorus. She was the President of the Usher Board at Bethesda and the State Jurisdictional Usher Board for a while.

Her favorite scripture was Psalm 84:10 – “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” Her favorite song was “I Won’t Complain” sung by the late Reverend Paul Jones.
After a brief illness she departed this life on August 26, 2018 at the age of 81.
Mother Hopes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Nathaniel Hopes Sr., her daughter: Beverly L. Holt, her son: Nathaniel Hopes Jr., her granddaughters: Shakeerah M. Hopes and Shaquanah Hopes, her brothers: Ottis C. Johnson, Alan C. Johnson, Lawrence “Red” Bass, William L. Robinson and Leroy Robinson Jr., her sisters: Tecolia Bass-Green, Evelyn “Dimpa” Hickman and Mother Leola Hopes.
