Obituary for Maryanne Bowers-Haley

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018 God, in his infinite wisdom, sent his angels to escort Maryanne Bowers-Haley to her Heavenly home. Maryanne was born on July 15, 1959 to the Late Graham and Doris Bowers.

Born and raised in Newark, NJ, Maryanne often proudly reminisced about her education at Abington Ave School. Her initial high school matriculation started at the old Girls Vocational High School, although she boasted in her later years that she considered herself a “Bulldog” representing her beloved South Side High School “Shabazz.” Later on in life, eager to move ahead, Maryanne went on to attend Essex County College School of Business of which she was so proud.

Maryanne was a hard worker and always kept a job. She held positions at the Hilton Hotel, St. James Pharmacy, and the last 21 years she spent at the NJ Department of Unemployment. If you have ever been unemployed or had to visit the Newark “One Stop” there is a chance you have had an encounter with Maryanne, also known as “Mrs. Haley”, and one of her antics and candid jokes or comments. Maryanne was a people person but stood out alone. She was not afraid to speak her mind and say what needed to be said.

Under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Edward B. Smart, Maryanne accepted the Lord as her personal savior and joined Israel Memorial AME Church in Newark NJ. She devoted her summers to helping and serving the community at the Israel Memorial AME Day Camp.

As a pretty young thing with those light eyes she caught the attention of her first love, Mr. Angelo Lynn. Together they had two children, Jamila and Angelo Murad.

Blessed to find love again, Maryanne met and married Marlon E. Haley Sr. and to this union Marlon E. Haley Jr. was born. She also gained a second daughter, Karen Haley.
Her family and her children meant the world to her. If you don’t believe it just take a walk past her cubicle at the Newark “One Stop” which she turned into her very own family shrine. Maryanne was good at many things but no one could argue with her ability to cook. She made the best of everything, if you never had an opportunity to try her jerked turkey wings, sorry but you will have to wait to go to heaven to try them.

Along with her family, Maryanne became an avid traveler, almost a poster child for the cruise industry all by herself.

Loved by all who knew her, Maryanne will truly be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Graham and Doris Bowers, husband, Marlon E. Haley, Sr. and son, Marlon E. Haley Jr. She leaves to mourn one daughter, Jamila Hammond (Thaddeus), one-stepdaughter, Karen Haley, and one son, Angelo Murad (Donte), two sisters, Sharon Bowers and Yvonne Pernier, and two brothers Graham Bowers Jr. (Mary) and Curtis Bowers. Four grandchildren: Jahniya, Thaddeus, Sani’Yah and Julian, her mother-in-law, Estelle Haley, two brothers-in-law, Lincoln Haley and George Haley, and one sister-in-law, Karen Haley, the special love of her second mother Mrs. Sarah B. Lynn and the Lynn family, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
