Obituary for Ella L. Mobley

Ella Lee McKoy Mobley departed this life on June 2, 2018 after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Frank McKoy and the late Cornelia Baker. Ella was born on September 28, 1928 in Rowland, NC. She was the fourth child of five siblings, all of whom preceded her in death, James Atha, Maggie, Willie Frank and Beatrice. After the death of her mother, Ella was raised by her brother James and sister-in-law Ethel.

Ella was educated at the Rowland Southside School.

Ella was baptized at an early age and joined the St. James Baptist Church in Rowland, NC. After relocating to Newark, NJ, she held several positions as a housekeeper.

Ella met and married Justice Trent in 1964 and remained happily married until his death in 1971. After his death, she became a member of Union Baptist Church.

Ella, thinking she would never marry again, met and married Andy Mobley, Jr. in August 1973. They celebrated matrimony until his death in July 1999.

Ella was an excellent cook and loved to bake homemade rolls, cakes, pies and macaroni & cheese amongst other dishes. She enjoyed making these dishes for her family and friends.

Ella had a flair for fashion. She strived for excellence in everything she did. She was a strong, proud woman whose hobbies included cooking, gardening and church activities. She was the Mother of the Church, Deaconess, and member of the Senior Alliance of Union Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Jessie Brown. She was appointed head of the Kitchen Committee. She was also a member of North 5th Street Block Association. She remained active in all her activities as long as she was able.

Ella was loved by her family and friends. She was a big sister/aunt to her nieces Clara and Mary, and to the other siblings James, Thomas, Robert and Ola all of whom preceded her in death.

Ella leaves to mourn her death: stepsons, Andy (Lori) Mobley, Harry (Mary) Neal, Robert (Diane) Odom and Charles Mullins; stepdaughters, Betty Hargrave, Helen Smith and Darlene Adams-White; grandchildren, Lena McLaughlin, Marcellus Mobley, Matt Mobley, Lillie Mobley, Victor Neal, Kim and Dee Dee Hargrave; nieces; caregiver—Mary McCallum of Bronx, NY, Clara (Johnnie) Williams of Flushing, NY, Timolin Williams of the home; special cousin/caregiver Mary (Robert) Montgomery of Irvington, NJ, Patricia (Harold) Parker, Linda Sandle, Sharon Patterson, Peggy Leggett, Sarah (Warren) Purcell, Trudy McKoy; nephews, Victor, Eugene, Willie Frank McKoy, Charles Leggett, David (Anita) Leggett; many great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mattie Neal and Vera McKoy. Ella was preceded in death by her stepsons, David Mobley and Bobby Thompson; daughter-in-law, Valerie Mobley; and son-in-law, Richard Hargrave. She is also survived by: cousins, Rev. Vivian Cook and Elizabeth Nelson; devoted family friends, A.D. McFarland, and Algine Darden; God-daughter, Christine Blane; longtime tenants, Teresa McDougle and Tiffany Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends.
